Regis shuts down Chatfield

LAKEWOOD – The Chatfield Chargers have been rolling with the punches since losing all-state standout quarterback Sam Stratton (knee) after Week Six.

In their second game of the sans-Sam era, the Chargers were flat beat up and knocked out, as the Regis Raiders rolled to a 35-6 Class 5A Big 8 League victory Oct. 23 at Jefferson County Stadium.

The Chargers (6-2) stalled in the first quarter, turned the ball over four times in the second quarter, and didn’t pick up a first down in the second half until there were eight minutes left in the fourth quarter and they were on their fifth offensive series.

The defense, meanwhile, got tenderized inside and cooked outside. Regis running back Marcus Walker carried the ball a whopping 34 times, racking up 181 yards and scoring four touchdowns. Raiders quarterback Davis Brendel calmly completed 11-of-19 passes for 187 yards.

“I think it was just that we really didn’t come out focused,” senior quarterback Tim Gleason said. “I think we need to come out next week and get better (and) like put this behind us.”

It doesn’t get any easier this week, as the Chargers will visit the North Area Athletic Complex on Friday (7 p.m.) to face second-ranked Arvada West (7-1), which needs a victory to secure at least a share of the Big 8 League title.

Gleason, who backed up Stratton for three seasons before making the switch to wide receiver this year, scrambled for 58 yards and a touchdown and threw for 80 yards. Gleason was intercepted once, and had receiver Erik Gayton fumble the ball a few steps after hauling in a 7-yard slant.

Gayton’s fumble, which seemed to just pop out of nowhere, was typical of Chatfield’s night. Gayton previously fumbled a kickoff return, and running back Shaw Gifford (79 yards on 11 carries) also fumbled during the disastrous second quarter where the Raiders converted three Chatfield turnovers into 21 points.

The speedy Chargers also got burned on a 60-yard pass play that put the Raiders up 14-0 with 6:15 left in the second quarter. The Chargers cut the deficit to 28-6 on Gleason’s 12-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter.

“We respected Regis,” Gleason said. “They are a really good team. They came out and they wanted this game. We just needed to come out and play harder.”

Chatfield’s defense tightened up early in the second half, but the offense could do nothing with the scoring reprieve. Their skill and speed never found the space to run or a rhythm to feed off of.

Stratton was suited up for the game for the senior celebration, and said he would suit up for Friday's game. He also said he plans to undergo knee surgery in the next few weeks.

Pomona hands Chatfield first loss

ARVADA — Battered and bruised, Chatfield refused to surrender in its Class 5A Big 8 League showdown with fellow unbeaten, Pomona.

With quarterback Sam Stratton slowed by a right leg injury in the second quarter, the Chargers’ high-powered offense came to near standstill. Defensively, the Chargers forced four turnovers (three interceptions and a fumble recovery) but also gave up their fair share of big plays.

In the end, the Panthers’ physicality up front proved too much as Pomona broke open a close game late, scoring a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to take over sole possession of first place in the league with a 42-21 victory Oct. 8 at the North Area Athletic Complex.

“For whatever reason, we just didn’t mesh,” Chatfield coach Bret McGatlin said. “We’d make plays offensively and then turn around give up big plays on defense. Then we’d come up with a turnover on defense and the offense would stall. It was just one of those nights, but give Pomona credit, they made plays.”

During a preseason scrimmage, Dayne Cordes, a manager for the Chatfield football team, pointed out to coach Bret McGatlin that the anniversary of his mother's murder was nearing. Cordes doesn't play because of sensory integration disorder.

McGatlin agreed to mark the moment this past week against rival Columbine in the Class 5A Big 8 League. Cordes, a sophomore, wore No. 16, walked out with team captains for the pregame toss and capped the night by leading the school fight song. In between, Chatfield edged Columbine, 16-13, on a late field goal.

The irony was thick. Cordes lost his mother in September 2001. The last time Chatfield defeated Columbine was in 2001. Cordes, 16 years old, wore No. 16, and the Chargers scored 16 points.

"I couldn't have written it any better," McGatlin said. "He said that his mom won that game. He was more excited than we were. Everybody loves him, gives him high-fives, just a special kid."

Said Michelle Cordes, Dayne's stepmother: "The sense of belonging the team gave him will stay with him forever."

Coming home.

For the first time since 1978, Evergreen will have a football game at home. The Cougars will welcome rival Conifer on Friday in the 3A Metro; then the Lobos will return the favor in 2010.

Capital idea — both foothills programs and enthusiastic communities are unique to 18-school Jefferson County and can at least momentarily thumb their noses at its sometimes dreary, impersonable district venues.

According to Evergreen athletic director Tony Barnett, temporary seating for about 2,000 fans has been secured. (Feel free to bring lawn chairs).

"We need to handle it, put on a good show," Barnett said.

Slides stop.

Playing just once per week makes football losing streaks seem longer than they actually are. Ask Battle Mountain and University, which each went more than a year without victory.

This past week Battle Mountain tamed Highland, 37-13, to snap a 19-game skid, and University beat Estes Park, 28-7, to end a 13-game winless run.

Heritage's Mitch Griebel had a season of highlights in the first half this past weekend against North. In less than 24 minutes of 4A Metro play, Griebel threw two touchdown passes, returned a punt for a touchdown, returned an interception for a touchdown and ran 10 yards for another touchdown in a 51-0 victory. . . . Estes Park has a player named Tylox Holler. . . . True, Eaglecrest was waxed, 39-7, in Zero Week by Mullen, but the Raptors have shown character by winning their last three Centennial games by a combined four points.

LAKEWOOD — To slay the mighty dragon, Chatfield needed some assistance.

With its high-powered offense held primarily in check by a tenacious Columbine defense, the Chargers had to get by on grit, determination and, ultimately, a strong right leg.

Josh Fralick nailed a 46-yard field goal with nine seconds remaining as Chatfield defeated Columbine for the first time since 2001, 16-13 on Sept. 24 at Jeffco Stadium.

“Before the kick, I just told myself to keep my head down and to trust my line,” said Fralick, who also made field goals of 37 and 33 yards. “I’ve never been in a situation like that before where a kick would decide the game.”

Trailing 13-3 entering the second half, Chatfield (4-0) evened the score in the third quarter, thanks to consecutive fumbles by Columbine.

The Rebels (3-1) struggled to move the ball in the second half, but appeared on the verge of winning the game themselves as quarterback Danny Spond, who scored two first half touchdowns, marched his team down the field and into Chatfield territory. Two delay of game penalties, though, moved the Rebels out of field goal range and, after a punt, Chatfield took over on its own 27 with 1:20 to play.

Denver Broncos high school coach of the week: Bret McGatlin

School: Chatfield Chargers, Class 5A Big 8 League, ranked No. 4 in The Denver Post/9News poll.

Record: 4-0 overall, 2-0 league; 20-16 career.

Coaching resume: Assistant at Columbine, 2000-03, and Green Mountain, 2004-05; in fourth year heading Chargers.

Lifelines: Age 32, native of Wheat Ridge. Graduated from Green Mountain (1995) and Adams State (2000); earned degree in physical education; earned master's in school administration (2003); teaches PE at Chatfield.

Back in his day: Wide receiver-free safety at Green Mountain, 1991-94, second team all-Jefferson County as a senior; wide receiver at Adams State, 1996-99, two years all-academic.

Last week: McGatlin admitted that "it was weird."

After the Chargers' Josh Fralick powered through a 46-yard field goal, his third of the game, into the wind with 9.7 seconds to play Thursday, the Chargers, arguably 5A's hottest team, had all but sealed a 16-13 victory against Columbine, their nearby rival that had beaten the Chargers in every meeting since 2001.

"One of coaches was jumping up and down and telling me that we had won," McGatlin said. "I had my hands on my knees and I couldn't bring myself up. I knew there was time left, and we hadn't won yet."

Chatfield soon withstood two long incompletions by the Rebels to secure the key Big 8 victory, then McGatlin relaxed.

"We put a lot into that game, and our school, kids and community wanted it so badly," the coach said. "To win like that was pretty cool."

Columbine led 13-0 in the first half as the Chargers were ineffective on offense and beaten on defense.

"We were shell-shocked early and it was bugging me, so we challenged the kids at halftime," McGatlin said.

It worked. Two key Rebels turnovers led to 10 Chatfield points to tie it in the third quarter, then the Chargers' defense forced punts on four consecutive possessions.

"We knew we had to get turnovers to get a chance," McGatlin said. "Even with our mistakes, the bottom line was that we couldn't turn it over and we won the field position."

Danny Newkirk, Aaron Norris and Kyle Slavin led the Chargers on defense, and Shaw Gifford ran for 146 yards and scored his team's only touchdown.

"We made (the Rebels) punt late, and that's very uncharacteristic for them," McGatlin said. "In past years, we couldn't do that."

The Denver Broncos high school coach of the week award, in its 14th year, will have 10 honorees during the regular season. NFL Charities will present $1,000 to the school's program. McGatlin joins Manzanola's James Lopez, Eaglecrest's Tom Doherty and Liberty's Jaron Cohen as winners in 2009. A coach of the year will be announced at the Broncos' final home game, against the Kansas City Chiefs on Jan. 3 at Invesco Field at Mile High, and receive $2,000. Coaches are selected by a panel consisting of Neil H. Devlin, The Denver Post; Billy Thompson, the Broncos; and Andy Lindahl, KOA 850 AM.

Another big win for Slavin's team

The Chatfield Chargers are for real. They proved it on Thursday night when they upset second-ranked Columbine to improve to 4-0. CU commit Kyle Slavin, who is starting both ways for Chatfield at tight end and defensive end, said the team was very confident even before the season began. "With all the weapons we had returning, we thought we could do something special this year," said Slavin. "It started last spring with the weight lifting program we went through. We had to be at the school at 6 am every day. That really pushed us and I think that helped us have the right mentality going into this season."

They have also defeated Dakota Ridge, Ponderosa and Bear Creek. "I really wanted us to beat Columbine and Arvada West, those are two teams that we had never beaten throughout my high school career coming into this year," Slavin said. "One down, one to go."

Chatfield will play Arvada West in their regular season finale on October 30th. Before then they will face Westminster (1-3), Pomona (4-0), Lakewood (2-2) and Regis Jesuit (1-3). Slavin has hauled in 14 passes so far this season. On defense, through the first two games, he had recorded 18 tackles, nine for a loss, two fumble recoveries along with one and a half sacks. "I think opposing teams know more about me this year. During the Columbine game, it seemed like the safety was always over the top with me," Slavin said. "But I just go out there and play and do whatever I can to help the team."

Fellow CU commit Danny Spond rushed for 181 yards and two touchdowns for Columbine in their loss to Chatfield. For the season, he has accounted for 555 yards of offense and seven touchdowns. "I have been playing against Danny since we were in the second grade and we hang out at the CU games, so I know him pretty well," Slavin said. "Before the game on Thursday, he texted me 'Good luck' and I wished him luck back."

Since the conclusion of the game has Slavin talked any trash? "No, we are just celebrating humbly," he replied.

As for Slavin's commitment to CU, it is as solid as ever. He attended the Buffaloes' first two home games against Colorado State and Wyoming as an unofficial visitor. "I still get contacted by other schools but I am very happy with my choice," said Slavin, who currently stands 6-foot-5, 230-pounds. "I have been going up to CU to watch games since I was two. I have had 12 people in my family earn a degree from there. So I have always been raised to be a Buff." Slavin projects as a tight end for the college level. He is a Rivals.com three-star prospect.

Fralick kicks Chargers past Rebels
First victory for Chatfield over Columbine since 2001

LAKEWOOD – Josh Fralick nailed a 46-yard field goal with nine seconds remaining as Chatfield defeated Columbine for the first time since 2001, 16-13 on Sept. 24 at Jeffco Stadium.

Trailing 13-3 entering the second half, Chatfield (4-0) evened the score in the third quarter, thanks to consecutive fumbles by Columbine.

Shaw Gifford ripped off a 29-yard run to move the ball into Columbine territory and a 9-yard pass from Sam Stratton to Kyle Slavin put Chatfield on the Columbine 19. A high snap on the ensuing play pushed the Chargers back 10 yards, and made Fralick’s field goal attempt a lot harder.

Despite Columbine coach Andy Lowry calling consecutive time outs, Fralick was unfazed and split the uprights with room to spare. Seconds later, pandemonium broke out on the Chatfield side of the field.

Stratton, who didn’t have his best game, stat-wise, wasn’t concerned about individual numbers.

“I couldn’t care less,” Stratton said. “We just found a way to win. We haven’t beaten Columbine in a long time. It’s hard to put into words just what this means.”

Chatfield Makes a Statement

Chatfield defeats Columbine (16-13) after coming from behind on the leg of Josh Fralick and a stout defense.

It was a huge defensive battle on both sides. Columbines offense that produces an avg of 31 pts per game was slowed down by Chatfields defensive front. Even though Danny Spond scored on two runs (3yds, and 62yd) for for Columbine's only scores, Chatfield shutout Columbine the second half to remain undefeated in the tough jeffco league.

In an interview earlier this week, Andy Lowry, Columbine head coach, said "Chatfield is tough this year. Their skill positions have some of the top speed in the state and they are very loaded with seniors." Chatfield's skill players has Sam Stratton(QB), Shaw Gifford(RB), Eric Gayton(WR), and Greg Kelsic(WR) along with Kyle Slavin(TE) who has committed to play football at CU.

In the end, it was Josh Fralick with 3 field goals (37yd, 33yd, and 46yd) and the Chatfield defense turned away Columbine for the first time since 2001.

LAKEWOOD — Coincidently or otherwise, the last time Chatfield defeated Columbine was in 2001, when the Chargers, featuring high-profile transfers such as LenDale White, now with the Tennessee Titans, went 14-0.

The references arose Thursday night, when the Chargers used a late 46-yard field goal into the wind to down the Rebels 16-13 at Jefferson County Stadium in the Class 5A Big 8 League.

Josh Fralick's third field goal of the game, a no-doubter after Columbine coach Andy Lowry tried to ice him twice by calling timeouts, made the Chargers, ranked No. 7 in The Denver Post/9News 5A poll, 4-0 overall, 2-0 in league.

"I'm just glad the line blocked," Fralick said. "I was pretty confident — confidence is key. I was thinking after the first half that I would have to pull through for my team."

He did, capping a difficult comeback against the No. 2 Rebels (3-1, 1-1), who led 13-0 in the first half and botched their chance down the stretch. Tied at 13 and after four runs by All-Colorado athlete Danny Spond pushed the Rebels to the Chatfield 35-yard line, two delay-of-game penalties and an incompletion forced a punt. (Read More)

Chargers sprint past Bears
Showdown with Columbine looms

LAKEWOOD — The advancement of Chatfield quarterback Sam Stratton has played out vividly over the past two seasons. A runner, a thrower, a leader and a playmaker at different times, the senior Wyoming pledge has put all of them together to become – quite simply – a weapon.

But one-man teams don’t knock off the No. 4 Bear Creek Bears. And that’s what made Chatfield’s monster 34-21 Class 5A Big 8 League victory Sept. 17 so sweet.

“Tonight they understand that,” Chargers coach Bret McGatlin said of the offseason and early morning workouts. “To win these games, you have to work as hard as we did. They earned it. We got a great bunch of kids.”

Using their superior speed, great downfield blocking and a surprising defensive scheme that saw them drop as many as nine players in coverage, the ninth-ranked Chargers (3-0) made the kind of early-season statement that has been missing from the program for years.

“I’m not shocked that we won, but I’m happy about it,” Stratton said.

Stratton was certainly magical, rushing for 119 yards and throwing for 161. He scored on a 2-yard touchdown run to put the Chargers up 7-0 in the first quarter, and ripped off a jaw-dropping, two-cut 60-yard sprint in the third quarter to give Chatfield a 27-7 lead.

His 63-yard bomb to a streaking Erik Gayton put the Chargers into the half up 21-7.

Running back Shaw Gifford was just as impressive. The senior rushed for 142 yards and scored touchdowns on his last touch of each half, running the option with Stratton to perfection and tearing through the Bears’ second level. (Read More)

LAKEWOOD — Chatfield may not have opened the towering door that guards elite football of the Class 5A Big 8 League.

But the Chargers put a dent in it, perhaps even knocked it ajar Thursday night, in a rousing 34-21 decision of Bear Creek at Jefferson County Stadium in The Denver Post game of the week.

In improving to 3-0 on the season, the victory in the league opener occurred as Chatfield received sound perimeter blocking that allowed its superior speed to find seams or simply outrace the Bear (1-2, 0-1).

"It's something we worked on all week," Chatfield coach Bret McGatlin said. "We've been talking about making it into the upper echelon of league teams." (Read More)

Game of the Week: Air show at JeffCo

LAKEWOOD — One of Colorado's advanced-placement football games is here.

In an opener of the Class 5A Big 8 League, the athleticism, skill and length of contest should be sizable tonight at 7 p.m. when Bear Creek meets Chatfield at Jefferson County Stadium in The Denver Post game of the week.

You may require a late snack — with all of the transition, ability for quick strikes and expected passing attempts.

Bear Creek, ranked No. 4 In The Denver Post/9News 5A poll, will be making its Denver-area debut, having played in Maryland and Grand Junction the first two weeks. However, these are the Bears we have known for nearly two decades: big, strong and full of offense — they have put up 76 points.

Add a wrinkle: Senior quarterback Zach Thenell has 520 yards passing, which isn't unusual, but has 188 yards rushing, which is.

"I think you guys have underestimated him," said his father and head coach, Tom Thenell.

It hasn't gone unnoticed by ninth-ranked Chatfield.

"Their offense is as deadly as I've seen it," Chargers coach Bret McGatlin said. "(Zach's) always been good. He must have worked his butt off in the offseason. That gives them a whole other threat."

In the End It Was Stratton For Chatfield

It seemed like a game to which results were directly tied to the performance of two players when Ponderosa's Mustang football team visited Chatfield last Friday night at Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood.

Yes, it always comes down to the team, but when certain players perform at their best, the team seems to rise to the occasion. It seemed on this night the success of these two teams would ride on the shoulders of two great leaders, Sam Stratton, QB from Chatfield and Riley Lange, the awesome linebacker from Ponderosa. In the end it was Stratton that got the better end of the duel. (Read More)

LAKEWOOD — They say Mustangs are tough to tame. But, put them alongside a stable horse and, with time, the Mustang can calm down.

That’s what happened to the Ponderosa Mustangs when they played the Chatfield Chargers on Sept. 11 at Jefferson County Stadium. The Chargers’ defense cooled off the Mustangs’ offense in the second half and Chatfield walked away with a 17-10 Class 5A nonleague victory.

With the score tied at 10 at the end of the third quarter, Chatfield’s defense stepped up in the fourth. The Chargers put a stop to three Ponderosa drives. On Chatfield’s third possession in the quarter, it looked as if Ponderosa would return the favor.

On fourth-and-2, quarterback Sam Stratton handed the ball off to running back Shaw Gifford. Gifford was hit almost immediately but powered through and gained a much-needed three yards to give Chatfield the first down.

“Coach Shaffer (the team’s offensive coordinator) trusted me enough on fourth-and-two and that meant a lot. It was a very crucial play,” said Gifford, who had 98 yards in the second half.

On first-and-10 from the Mustangs’ 21-yard-line, Stratton found Andrew Hood in the end zone for a touchdown with 4 minutes to play.

“Sam threw a good ball and I just turned around and caught it,” Hood said. “If it hadn’t been for Shaw’s play we wouldn’t have even had that opportunity.”

In fact, Chatfield (2-0) trailed most of the game. Ponderosa put the first points on the scoreboard with a 25-yard field goal in the second quarter. Chatfield answered with its own field goal, but the Mustangs went ahead 10-3 late in the second when Michael Segura caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Thomas Thornton.

“I was a little shocked at what was going on (in the first half),” Stratton said. “We couldn’t move the ball. At halftime, coach (Bret McGatlin) reminded us that this week’s theme was ‘find a way to win’ and we came out in the second half and it just started clicking.”

Stratton also seemed to have an angel watching over him. The words “Jo Jo” were inscribed on his eye black patches, in memory of his grandmother, who passed away in June.

Hood uncovers winning catch

LAKEWOOD — Andrew Hood soared into the air, a cornerback hanging from his back like a cape. The Chatfield receiver had a few tasks at hand — notably, keep the blistering pass in his hands, keep a foot inbounds and oh, yeah, keep his injured shoulder from popping out of his shoulder pads.

"I haven't seen a catch that great since I've been coaching," said Chatfield coach Bret McGatlin, a former receiver himself, now in his 10th year of coaching. "It looked like his fingers got longer as he caught it."

Stratton's monster game carries Chatfield to win

LAKEWOOD — Chatfield struck early and often in its cross-classification showdown with rival Dakota Ridge at Jeffco Stadium.

The Chargers raced out to a 33-6 halftime advantage and cruised home to a 46-27 win on Sept. 4.

Senior quarterback Sam Stratton was electrifying, both on his feet and throwing the football. Stratton ran for scores of 82 and 96 yards in the first half, and added a 68-yard scamper to his credit in the fourth quarter. He also threw a 68-yard touchdown to Erick Gayton and a 1-yarder to Tim Gleason.

Stratton finished the evening with 254 yards rushing and 142 passing. Shaw Gifford, who scored on a 41-yard run, finished with over 100 yards for the Chargers.

Dakota Ridge, which gets a chance to rebound from the loss on Sept. 10 when it takes on its first 4A foe in Green Mountain, outscored the Chargers 21-13 in the second half.

Even when he was a kid, Danny Spond was The Man.

Spond won seven consecutive Carnation Bowls, South Jeffco youth football's version of the Super Bowl, before becoming the starting quarterback at ColumbineHigh School. His record as a little leaguer? Try 77-1 with an asterisk. As in, the one game he lost as an eighth-grader, he watched from the sideline because of a knee injury.

"That one was tough to watch," Spond said. "I remember it well. We lost to the Warriors."

The date: Oct. 8, 2005. The score: Warriors 22, Hurricanes 16 in double overtime. How do we know? Because Sam Stratton, the Warriors' quarterback before moving on to ChatfieldHigh School, is reading it off the award he won that day. (Read more)
